Oil pollution control: A history
Oil pollution has been a major environmental concern since the 1920s. The search for a solution has ranged from prevention to partial measures coupled with compensation and remedial action. Although recent measures appear to have 'solved' the problem, this book offers a different assessment of the efforts of governments and the oil and maritime industries. It also provides the first comprehensive story of control policies and practices, using primary and secondary sources, thus providing a unique perspective to current approaches. Numerous factors - personalities, state policies, developments in the oil and shipping industries, public agitation, and scientific studies - are identified in a framework useful for analyzing any environmental problem. The book concludes that oil pollution control sets the model for other marine pollution problems, with potentially alarming results.
