Title: A passive means for eliminating range loss for projectiles with partially restrained internal members

Conference ·
OSTI ID:6163184

A theory is developed to investigate offsetting the center of gravity (cg) of a Partially Restrained Internal Member (PRIM) from the projectile spin axis to provide a passive means for eliminating the PRIM induced instabilities that sometimes cause large losses in range and deflection. Results for cylindrical PRIM geometries indicated that, except for large diameter thin PRIM shapes, small PRIM cg offsets, including some that occur randomly within manufacturing tolerances, should be sufficient to reduce the instability induced range and deflection losses to acceptable levels. Experimental results are presented to confirm the stabilizing effect of PRIM cg offset.
