Electron positron pairs in radio pulsars

The role of electron-positron pairs in some theoretical models of the magnetospheres of radio pulsars is outlined. While there is little direct evidence for the presence of pairs in the form of an observed recombination line, their formation leads to many promising features in theories of the electrodynamics and plasma physics of these objects' magnetospheric structure and for the interpretation of the observed photon emissions, both from pulsars themselves and from the surrounding interstellar medium. 128 references, 4 figures.
