Title: Oil pipelines of the United States: progress and outlook

Book ·
OSTI ID:6108120

An overview of American oil pipelines is given and the future of the industry is discussed. Oil pipelines serve as a statistically-proven safe means of transporting the 600 million gallons of petroleum products used daily by the US. The proportion of price per gallon of refined petroleum products from pipeline transportation charges has dropped steadily as the result of ever-larger improved systems, with a network of over 227,000 miles of oil pipelines capable of carrying more than 50 different grades of refined and specialty products. The future of oil pipelines is seen to hold expansion in the construction of lines from offshore production sites and the construction of carbon dioxide lines to facilitate enhanced oil recovery. Expansion is said to be dependent upon pipeline companies earning an adequate rate of return on investment to attract money for expenditures and freedom from burdensome and costly government-sponsored regulations. 26 figures, 7 tables.
