Aqueous solubilities (S) and 1-octanol/water partition coefficients (K[sub ow]) of four PCBs-- 4-chlorobiphenyl, 2,4,6-trichlorobiphenyl, 2,3,4,5-tetrachlorobiphenyl, and 2,2[prime],4,4[prime],6,6[prime]-hexachlorobiphenyl -- were determined both individually and in pairs, using a generator-column technique, to investigate the effect of cosolutes on S and K[sub ow]. No statistical differences between S and K[sub ow] measured individually and in pairs were observed for the four PCBs in 20 out of 24 cases. In the other four cases S or K[sub ow] measured in the presence of a cosolute was only slightly different form that observed individually.
