Metallurgical applications of upgraded coal from the LFC process
- ENCOAL Corp., Gillette, WY (United States)
ENCOAL{reg_sign} Corporation has been demonstrating the Liquids From Coal (LFC{trademark}) technology at a 1,000-ton/day facility near Gillette, Wyoming for more than four years. One of the coproducts from this process is Process Derived Fuel (PDF{trademark}), which is being evaluated for metallurgical applications. This paper focuses on the use of PDF from the LFC technology to produce a superior grade, coal-based Direct Reduced Iron (DRI). PDF{trademark} is a low-sulfur, low-ash fuel product made from western subbituminous coal that offers a high quality carbon source for coal-based DRI processes. This new fuel, which has heating characteristics similar to bituminous coal and ash, and handling properties similar to Powder River Basin Coal, has been successfully tested as a reductant in the rotary hearth furnace DRI technology developed by Maumee Research and Engineering. The resultant DRI product is less expensive than gas-based DRI and requires lower capital investment than other coal or gas-based DRI processes. The refinement of this process and the anticipated production of 500,000 tons/year of DRI by the second quarter of the year 2000 will offer distinct competitive advantages to steel producers seeking virgin iron units.
