Financial analyses of intensive and low-cost reforestation options are conducted for two predominant timber types in the United States: Loblolly pine stands with hardwood competition in the South, and Douglas-fir and red alder stands in the Pacific Northwest. Results suggest that low-cost regeneration options may satisfy both economic and environmental objectives that are difficult to attain with intensive forest practices.
