The radical telomerization of ethylene by triethylsilane in the presence of tert-butyl peroxide (TBP) leads to the formation of a mixture of telomers with content of the first member of the series (T/sub 1/) 64% of the total for T/sub 1/-T/sub 3/ (140/sup 0/C, M/S approx. = 0.3) Under analogous conditions but in the case of initiation by Mn/sub 2/(CO)/sub 10/ or Re/sub 2/(CO)/sub 10/, the content of T/sub 1/ is raised to 98-100%. The formation of (C/sub 2/H/sub 5/)/sub 3/Si/sup ./ radicals in the (C/sub 2/H/sub 5/)/sub 3/SiH-Mn/sub 2/(CO)/sub 10/ system was confirmed using the ESR spin trap method. The use of the initiating system containing Mn/sub 2/(CO)/sub 10/) permitted the selective hydrosilylation of readily polymerizable acrylic monomers, methyl acrylate and methyl methacrylate.
