Photodriven processes for production of hydrogen by water splitting (a review)

An overview is given of each of three processes for dissociating water by visible light by incorporating reactions using photosensitizers. These processes are: photochemical processes using photocatalysts such as compound salts and photosynthetic dyes; photobiochemical processes using natural or synthetic plant chlorophyll, algae, or bacteria; and photoelectrochemical processes using semiconductor photocatalysts such as TiO electrodes.
