A CONCEPTUAL DESIGN OF THE MODEL C STELLARATOR

Technical Report ·
DOI:https://doi.org/10.2172/4299735· OSTI ID:4299735
Consideration is given to the design of a new stellarator intermediate in size between thc present B models and a full-scale power reactor. This new machine, designated model C, is conceived as as experimental tool having as much flexibility as feasible. With such a device it should be possible to extend considerably the knowledge of plasma physics under the conditions appropriate to a full-scale reactor. The first chapters are directed to a determination of the over-all requirements and the choice of size. There follows a complete conceptual design of the entire installation with engineering analyses and preliminary engineering design. With the exception of a few items as noted in the summary this report is complete in sufficient detail to serve as a basls for the detailed engineering required to produce working drawings. Model C is a pulsed stellarator capable of simulating steady-state operation, with a vacuum tube 9 inches in diameter in the characteristic figure-eight configuration, and measuring about 150 ft along the axis. The confining magnetic field is supplied by external coils requiring 150,000 kw peak of pulsed power. Ionization and heating of the gas are obtained by the application of externally applied electromagnetic fields. (auth)
