Source water protection is one of multiple barriers used by water utilities to provide high quality public water supplies. Philadelphia Suburban Water Company`s approach in this area relies heavily on analytical methods to identify threats to water quality and to engage resources to reduce or eliminate those threats. This analytical approach is coupled with limited land ownership and control and, on rare occasions, with legal action to defend source waters quality. This paper reviews some of the experiences and perspectives which have emerged from this approach.
