Reactions of ruthenium trichloride with imidazole and histamine: Crystal structure of the complex (C{sub 5}N{sub 3}H{sub 11}){sub 2}[Ru{sub 2}Ocl{sub 10}]
- Kurnakov Institute of General and Inorganic Chemistry, Moscow (Russian Federation)
Cation-anionic ruthenium(III) complexes with imidazole and histamine of the composition (C{sub 3}H{sub 5}N{sub 2}){sub 3}[RuCl{sub 6}] (I) and (C{sub 5}N{sub 3}H{sub 11}){sub 2}Cl[RuCl{sub 6}]{center_dot}H{sub 2}O (II) and the ruthenium(IV) complex with histamine (C{sub 5}N{sub 3}H{sub 11}){sub 2}[Ru{sub 2}OCl{sub 10}] (III) were synthesized. In solutions of complex II in 6 M HCl, ruthenium(III) oxidizes to ruthenium(IV) in the presence of air at room temperature, thus forming a ruthenium(IV) oxo complex. Structures of complexes I-III are determined by the IR spectroscopic method. An X-ray structural analysis of complex III was carried out. The crystals are monoclinic with the following lattice parameters: a = 10.182(1) {angstrom}, b = 10.747(2) {angstrom}, c = 12.396(1) {angstrom}, {beta} = 112.97(1){degrees}, space group P2{sub 1}/c, Z = 2, V = 1248.9(3) {angstrom}{sup 3}, d(calcd.) = 2.57 g/cm{sup 3}; R = 0.034. Ruthenium atoms have an octahedral environment constituted of five chlorine atoms and a bridging oxygen atom situated in the center of inversion. The binuclear complex anion contains a linear Ru-O-Ru fragment with the Ru{center_dot}{center_dot}{center_dot}Ru distance of 3.5749(3) {angstrom}. The Ru-O bond equals 1.7881(4) {angstrom}; Ru-Cl bonds range from 2.352(1) to 2.383(1) {angstrom}. A doubly protonated histamine cation adopts the syn-syn conformation, which is unusual for such complexes. Chlorine atoms of the complex anion and histamine molecules are involved in a system of hydrogen bonds (ordinary and bifurcated). Both NH groups of the imidazole ring and an NH{sub 3} group of the histamine side change are proton donors.
