The high cost of electrical energy when applied to T and D lines with a high load factor produces energy costs over the life of overhead lines which far exceeds the construction cost of the line. Many overhead conductor losses have 10 to 3O watts per foot per phase at full load. Larger conductor and higher voltages have been used to reduce these losses much to the displeasure of the public. Overhead lines have created aesthetic, safety, storm or earthquake damage, and more recently electric and magnetic field health problems. A very large conductor, underground cable, with a conductor loss of only one wall per toot per phase may be feasible and economical for utility transmission and distribution lines. The underground system would be isolated phase with one point grounding of the insulation shield. The insulation would be a continuous paper spacer pressurized with 40 to 60 psig of SF{sub 6} gas in a non-metallic enclosure.
