The magnetic structure of the pyrochlore Ho{sub 2}CrSbO{sub 7}, which orders magnetically below 13 K, has been studied using neutron powder diffraction. Ho{sub 2}CrSbO{sub 7} is found to form an “ordered spin-ice structure” where the magnetic moments are constrained along the 111 axes, but with a ferromagnetic moment in one direction. The bulk magnetic properties, including dc and ac susceptibilities and heat capacity, of the pyrochlore oxides Ho{sub 2}Mn{sub 2}O{sub 7} and Yb{sub 2}Mn{sub 2}O{sub 7} are reported and compared with those of the previously studied Y{sub 2}Mn{sub 2}O{sub 7}. In the latter case the magnetic Mn{sup 4+} ions occupy the 16{ital c} sites in {ital Fd}3{ital m} which define a potentially frustrated three-dimensional array of corner sharing tetrahedra. Geometrical Frustration in the Ferromagnetic Pyrochlore Ho{sub 2}Ti{sub 2}O{sub 7}

We report a detailed study of the pyrochlore Ho{sub 2}Ti{sub 2}O{sub 7}, in which the magnetic ions (Ho{sup 3+}) are ferromagnetically coupled with J{approximately}1 K . We show that the presence of local Ising anisotropy leads to a geometrically frustrated ground state, preventing long-range magnetic order down to at least 0.05K. However, unlike in the case of a frustrated {ital antiferromagnet,} this disorder is principally static. In a magnetic field, the ground-state degeneracy is broken and ordered magnetic phases are formed which display an unusual history dependence due to the slow dynamics of the system.
