Title: Higher-form symmetries and their anomalies in M-/F-theory duality

Abstract

We explore higher-form symmetries of M- and F-theory compactified on elliptic fibrations, determined by the topology of their asymptotic boundaries. The underlying geometric structures are shown to be equivalent to known characterizations of the gauge group topology in F-theory via Mordell-Weil torsion and string junctions. We further study dimensional reductions of the 11d Chern-Simons term in the presence of torsional boundary G₄-fluxes, which encode background gauge fields of center one-form symmetries in the lower-dimensional effective gauge theory. We find contributions that can be interpreted as ’t Hooft anomalies involving the one-form symmetry which originate from a fractionalization of the instanton number of non-Abelian gauge theories in F-/M-theory compactifications to 8d/7d and 6d/5d.

Here, we study aspects of heterotic/F-theory duality for compactifications with Abelian gauge symmetries. We consider F-theory on general Calabi-Yau manifolds with a rank one Mordell-Weil group of rational sections. By rigorously performing the stable degeneration limit in a class of toric models, and also derive both the Calabi-Yau geometry and the spectral cover describing the vector bundle in the heterotic dual theory. Gauge group topology of 8D Chaudhuri-Hockney-Lykken vacua

Compactifications of the Chaudhuri-Hockney-Lykken (CHL) string to eight dimensions can be characterized by embeddings of root lattices into the rank 12 momentum lattice Λ_M, the so-called Mikhailov lattice. F-theory on all toric hypersurface fibrations and its Higgs branches

We consider F-theory compactifications on genus-one fibered Calabi-Yau manifolds with their fibers realized as hypersurfaces in the toric varieties associated to the 16 reflexive 2D polyhedra. We present a base-independent analysis of the codimension one, two and three singularities of these fibrations. We use these geometric results to determine the gauge groups, matter representations, 6D matter multiplicities and 4D Yukawa couplings of the corresponding effective theories. All these theories have a non-trivial gauge group and matter content. We explore the network of Higgsings relating these theories. Such Higgsings geometrically correspond to extremal transitions induced by blow-ups in the 2D toric varieties. We recover the 6D effective theories of all 16 toric hypersurface fibrations by repeatedly Higgsing the theories that exhibit Mordell-Weil torsion. The center-flavor symmetry of a gauge theory specifies the global form of consistent gauge and flavor bundle background field configurations. For 6D gauge theories which arise from a tensor branch deformation of a superconformal field theory (SCFT), we determine the global structure of such background field configurations, including possible continuous Abelian symmetry and R-symmetry bundles. Proceeding to the conformal fixed point, this provides a prescription for reading off the global form of the continuous factors of the zero-form symmetry, including possible nontrivial mixing between flavor and R-symmetry. When rational sections become cyclic — Gauge enhancement in F-theory via Mordell-Weil torsion

We explore novel gauge enhancements from abelian to non-simply-connected gauge groups in F-theory. Accordingly, we consider complex structure deformations of elliptic fibrations with a Mordell-Weil group of rank one and identify the conditions under which the generating section becomes torsional. In the specific case of Ζ₂ torsion we construct the generic solution to these conditions and show that the associated F-theory compactification exhibits the global gauge group [SU₍₂₎ × SU₍₄₎]/Ζ₂ × SU₍₂₎.
