Understanding and restricting microbial surface attachment will enhance wastewater treatment with membranes. We report a maskless lithographic patterning technique for the generation of patterned polymer coatings on ultrafiltration membranes. Polyethylene glycol, zwitterionic, or negatively charged hydrophilic polymer compositions in parallel- or perpendicular-striped patterns with respect to feed flow were evaluated using wastewater. Membrane fouling was dependent on the orientation and chemical composition of the coatings. Modifications reduced alpha diversity in the attached microbial community (Shannon indices decreased from 2.63 to 1.89) which nevertheless increased with filtration time. Polysulfone hollow fiber membranes are currently in extensive industrial use, either as such for ultrafiltration (UF) applications or as a base for subsequent coating operations for use as gas or vapor separation membranes. A laboratory apparatus for making hollow fiber membranes by the solution spinning process is described. Several hollow fiber membranes form polysulfone (Udel-3500) and polyethersulfone (Victrex) polymers have been made by using the above apparatus. The effects of spin-solution composition, length of air gap, and pressure used for fiber extrusion on fiber dimensions and ultrafiltration performance of the resulting membranes have been studied and are discussed.

The effects of feed flow velocity through the fiber bore on pressure drop in the test fiber bundle, membrane separations for PEG solutes, and the obtainable mass transfer coefficients under the test conditions have been experimentally determined and discussed. Maximizing the grafting of zwitterions onto the surface of ultrafiltration membranes to improve antifouling properties

Superhydrophilic zwitterions have been extensively exploited for surface modification to improve antifouling properties. However, it remains challenging to form layers of <20 nm with high zwitterion content on the surfaces with different degrees of hydrophilicity. We demonstrate that amine-functionalized sulfobetaine (SBAm) can be co-deposited with dopamine on ultrafiltration (UF) membranes, leading to a thickness of 10 nm to 50 nm and an SBAm content of up to 31 mass% in the coating layers. Excitation of low temperature helium or helium/water plasma and subsequent exposure to air of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) ultrafiltration membranes was used to hydrophilize the surface of these materials.
