Title: Higgs Boson Production in Bottom-Quark Fusion to Third Order in the Strong Coupling

Abstract

We present the inclusive cross section at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N³LO) in perturbative QCD for the production of a Higgs boson via bottom-quark fusion. We employ the five-flavor scheme, treating the bottom quark as a massless parton while retaining a nonvanishing Yukawa coupling to the Higgs boson. We find that the dependence of the hadronic cross section on the renormalization and factorization scales is substantially reduced. For judicious choices of the scales the perturbative expansion of the cross section shows a convergent behavior. We present results for the N³LO cross section at various collider energies. In comparison to the cross section obtained from the Santander matching of the four- and five-flavor schemes, we predict a slightly higher cross section, though the two predictions are consistent within theoretical uncertainties.

This paper presents predictions for jet pseudorapidity ({eta}) and transverse momentum (p{sub T}) distributions for the production of the standard model Higgs boson in association with a high-p{sub T} hadronic jet. We discuss the contributions of electroweak loops and of bottom-quark parton processes to the cross section. The latter arise in the five-flavor scheme. Predictions for the Tevatron and the Large Hadron Collider with 10 TeV collision energy are presented. A precise prediction of its total and differential cross section can have a great impact on the discovery of a Higgs boson with large bottom-quark Yukawa coupling, like the scalar (h{sup 0} and H{sup 0}) and pseudoscalar (A{sup 0}) Higgs bosons of the minimal supersymmetric standard model in the region of large tan{beta}. New mechanism for the top-bottom mass hierarchy

We propose a mechanism to generate hierarchy between masses of the top and bottom quarks without fine-tuning of the Yukawa coupling constants in the context of the two Higgs doublet model (THDM). In the THDM with a discrete symmetry, there exists the vacuum where only the top quark receives the mass of the order of the electroweak symmetry breaking scale v({approx_equal}246 GeV), while the bottom quark remains massless. By introducing a small soft-breaking parameter m{sub 3}{sup 2} of the discrete symmetry, the bottom quark perturbatively acquires a nonzero mass. Processes at hadron colliders, such as the production of jets, are described by the Quantum Chromodynamics theory (QCD). Precise descriptions of processes involving jets in association with a vector boson have nowadays large relevance as they represent irreducible background to other Standard Model (SM) processes and searches for new physics. The experimental study and understanding of the b-jet production in association with a Z boson are crucial for many reasons. For one side, it is the most important background for a light Higgs boson decaying into a bottom-antibottom quark pair and produced in the ZH mode.This is one of the most promising channels for the Higgs search at Tevatron in particular since the latest results have excluded the high mass region (MH > 127 GeV/c² ). For another side the signature of b-jets and a Z boson is also background to new physics searches, such as supersymmetry, where a large coupling of the Higgs boson to bottom quarks is allowed. The produ ction cross section measurement of b-jets in events with a Z boson has already been performed at hadron colliders, at the Tevatron by CDF and D0 experiments and are now pursued at the LHC by ATLAS and CMS.
