We have performed an experimental cross calibration of a suite of mineral equilibria within mantle rock bulk compositions that are commonly used in geobarometry to determine the equilibration depths of upper mantle assemblages. Multiple barometers were compared simultaneously in experimental runs, where the pressure was determined using in-situ measurements of the unit cell volumes of MgO, NaCl, Re and h-BN between 3.6 and 10.4 GPa, and 1250 and 1500 °C. Independent measurements of the volumetric and elastic properties of Columbia River basalt glass were made up to 5.5 GPa by high-pressure X-ray microtomography and GHz-ultrasonic interferometry, respectively. The Columbia River basalt displays P and S wave velocity minima at 4.5 and 5 GPa, respectively, violating Birch’s law. These data constrain the pressure dependence of the density and elastic moduli at high pressure, which cannot be modeled through usual equations of state nor determined by stepwise integrating the bulk sound velocity as is common practice. In-situ Elasticity Measurement for the Unquenchable High-Pressure Clinopyroxene Phase: Implication for the Upper Mantle

Polycrystal elasticity of the unquenchable MgSiO3 high-pressure clinoenstatite has been measured using ultrasonic interferometry in conjunction with in-situ X-ray diffraction and imaging techniques within its stability field in a large volume multi-anvil apparatus for the first time. At 6.5 GPa, we obtained {partial_derivative}KS/{partial_derivative}P = 5.6(3), {partial_derivative}G/{partial_derivative}P = 1.5(1), {partial_derivative}KS/{partial_derivative}T = -0.017(1) GPa K-1 and ({partial_derivative}G/{partial_derivative}T) = -0.015(1) GPa K-1.
