Title: Anomaly cancellation in effective supergravity from the heterotic string with an anomalous U(1)

Abstract

We show that a choice of Pauli-Villars regulators allows the cancellation of all the conformal and chiral anomalies in an effective field theory from Z3 compactification of the heterotic string with two Wilson lines and an anomalous U(1).

We use Pauli–Villars regularization to evaluate the conformal and chiral anomalies in the effective field theories from Z₃ and Z₇ compactifications of the heterotic string without Wilson lines. We show that parameters for Pauli–Villars chiral multiplets can be chosen in such a way that the anomaly is universal in the sense that its coefficient depends only on a single holomorphic function of the three diagonal moduli. It is therefore possible to cancel the anomaly by a generalization of the four-dimensional Green–Schwarz mechanism. In particular we are able to reproduce the results of a string calculation of the four-dimensional chiral anomalymore » for these two models.« less

We display the full anomaly structure of supergravity, including new D-term contributions to the conformal anomaly. This expression has the super-Weyl and chiral U(1){sub K} transformation properties that are required for implementation of the Green-Schwarz mechanism for anomaly cancellation. We outline the procedure for full anomaly cancellation. Our results have implications for effective supergravity theories from the weakly coupled heterotic string theory.

Quantum supergravity, supergravity anomalies and string phenomenology

I discuss the role of quantum effects in the phenomenology of effective supergravity theories from compactification of the weakly coupled heterotic string. An accurate incorporation of these effects requires a regularization procedure that respects local supersymmetry and BRST invariance and that retains information associated with the cut-off scale, which has physical meaning in an effective theory. I briefly outline the Pauli–Villars regularization procedure, describe some applications, and comment on what remains to be done to fully define the effective quantum field theory.

Exact models of extremal dyonic four-dimensional black hole solutions of heterotic string theory

Families of exact (0,2) supersymmetric conformal field theories of magnetically and electrically charged extremal 4D black hole solutions of heterotic string theory are presented. They are constructed using a (0,1) supersymmetric SL(2,[ital openR])[times]SU(2) Weiss-Zumino-Witten model where anomalously embedded U(1)[times]U(1) subgroups are gauged. Crucial cancellations of the U(1) anomalies coming from the supersymmetric fermions, the current algebra fermions, and the gauging ensure that there is a consistency of these models at the quantum level. Open strings on orbifolds and anomaly analysis

The consistency of open superstring theory compactified on a Z{sub 2} orbifold is studied. Boundary and cross-cap operators are constructed for the Z{sub 2} orbifold model; and Chan-Paton factors are chosen so that massless sources cancel among the boundary and cross-cap operators. It is argued that this leads to gauge, mixed, and gravitational anomaly cancellation. Anomalous scattering amplitudes relevant to the gauge and mixed gauge/gravitational anomalies are explicitly calculated and shown to vanish for both the flat space and Z{sub 2} orbifold models.
