Radioactivity in pekin ducks on the Columbia River

Thirteen pekin ducks placed on the Columbia River at 100-F for monitoring purposes were sacrificed after 1 to 15 months exposure to the slightly contaminated water of the stream. Eleven tissues or organs and feces samples of each fowl were assayed for beta radioactivity. Thyroids containing I/sup 131/ from the 200 Area stack gas contamination were highest of all tissues. Of other tissues the pancreas was generally higher, averaging about 0.04 uc/kg. Bone, liver, spleen, gonads and kidneys were of about the same order of magnitude, while muscle, lung, blood and brain were usually lower by a factor of two.more »« less

This report describes the metallothionein (MT) levels and accumulation of mercury, lead, and cadmium, as well as their interaction with tissue zinc, copper, and iron, and the histopathological changes in kidneys of ducks exposed to methylmercury chloride (MeHgCl), lead acetate (PbAc), and cadmium chloride (CdCl{sub 2}), singly or in combination for 13 wk. Correlation between mercury in wings and breast muscles in ducks

Significant positive correlations were found between levels of mercury in wing muscles and breast muscles in each of five species of ducks. Average ratios of mercury levels in wing muscle to those in breast muscle ranged from 0.70:1.00 to 0.75:1.00 in those species.
