In this study, the fire growth and suppression models in FireFOAM were validated for rack-storage commodities consisting of two solid fuels, namely corrugated cardboard boxes and hardwood pallets, which are referred to as Class 2 commodity. Validation experiments included two fire-growth and two fire-suppression configurations with different rack-storage array heights (3 and 5 tiers). In the suppression study, standard-response upright ceiling sprinklers (K-factor of 160 lpm/bar1/2) were used. The time-resolved chemical heat release rates obtained from the experiments were used to validate the fire growth model. The observed sprinkler activations and fire-spread patterns were used to validate the suppression model.more »« less

Georgia-Pacific operates a corrugated packaging facility in Doraville, Georgia which a suburb of Atlanta. The plant processes bulk brown paper into corrugated sheets for corrugated packaging. The plant`s process and building heat requires approximately 15,000 PPH steam at 150 psig which was supplied by a natural gas fired package boiler. The mill disposed of the cardboard trimmings and waste in a nearby landfill at a disposal cost of several thousand dollars per month. Pallet fire test for steel drum storage on wooden pallets

A fire test was conducted by the Martin Marietta PORTS Fire Protection Engineering Department on October 3, 1991. This test was designed and set up to simulate a proposed storage configuration. The array consisted of 55-gallon steel drums, filled with noncombustible waste material, placed on wooden pallets stacked three tiers high. Results from the test served as the basis for determining the fire protection requirements for this type of storage.
