Tungsten will be used as plasma-facing material in the divertor in ITER, but it undergoes detrimental surface-subsurface morphological changes under irradiation. One type of tungsten that may mitigate such morphologies is porous tungsten due to higher defect sink areal density. While surface nanostructures such as fuzz may compromise plasma performance, their intrinsic porosity offers a proxy for a porous material and strategies to prevent high-Z impurity emission. Comparison of Deuterium Retention for Ion-irradiated and Neutron-irradiated Tungsten

The behavior of D retention for Fe{sup 2+}-irradiated tungsten with a damage of 0.025-3 dpa was compared with that for neutron-irradiated tungsten with 0.025 dpa. The D{sub 2} thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS) spectra for Fe{sup 2+}-irradiated tungsten consisted of two desorption stages at 450 and 550 K, while that for neutron-irradiated tungsten was composed of three stages and an addition desorption stage was found at 750 K. The desorption rate of the major desorption stage at 550K increased as the displacement damage increased due to Fe{sup 2+} irradiation increasing. Tungsten (W), a primary candidate for the plasma-facing components of nuclear fusion reactors (e.g. the divertor region in ITER) is susceptible to cracks, blisters, bubbles, and other morphological changes when irradiated with energetic particles. This work investigated two new materials, nanograined W and a nanograined W–Ti alloy, for potential use as plasma-facing materials.
