Title: Comment on “Instability studies at the CERN Proton Synchrotron during transition crossing”

Abstract

In the article of Migliorati, Aumon, Koukovini-Platia, Huschauer, Metral, Sterbini and Wang [Phys. Rev. Accel. Beams 21, 120101 (2018)PRABCJ2469-988810.1103/PhysRevAccelBeams.21.120101], hereafter the Article and the Authors, the long-standing qualification of the PS instability as the transverse mode-coupling instability, or TMCI, is not mentioned, while a model of the beam breakup (BBU) is discussed. Do the observations and modeling of the Article refute the long-standing idea that the PS instability is the TMCI?

We show untenability of key points of the recent article of N. Biancacci, E. Metral, and M. Migliorati [Phys. Rev. Accel. Beams 23, 124402 (2020)], hereafter the article and the authors. The main Eqs. (23) are shown to be incorrect even as an approximation. The article claims the solution of this pair of equations to be in “excellent agreement” with the pyheadtail simulations for CERN PS, which is purportedly demonstrated by Fig. 6. Were it so, it would be either a signal of a mistake in the code or a consequence of a nonsmoothness of the simulations.

High-quality positron acceleration in beam-driven plasma accelerators

Acceleration of positron beams in plasma-based accelerators is a highly challenging task. To realize a plasma-based linear collider, acceleration of a positron bunch with high-efficiency is required, while maintaining both a low emittance and a subpercent-level energy spread. Recently, a plasma-based positron acceleration scheme was proposed in which a wake suitable for the acceleration and transport of positrons is produced in a plasma column by means of an electron drive beam [Diederichs et al., Phys. Cumulative beam breakup in linear accelerators with time-dependent parameters

A formalism presented in a previous paper for the analysis of cumulative beam breakup (BBU) with arbitrary time dependence of the beam current and with misalignment of the cavities and focusing elements [J. R. Delayen, Phys. Rev. ST Accel. Beams 6, 084402 (2003)] is extended to include time dependence of the focusing and coupling between the beam and the dipole modes. Rykovanov, Geddes, Schroeder, Esarey and Leemans [Phys. Rev. Accel. Beams 19, 030701 (2016); hereafter RGSEL] have recently reported on the analytic derivation for the laser pulse frequency modulation (chirping) which controls spectrum broadening for high laser pulse intensities. We demonstrate here that their results are the same as the exact solutions reported in Terzic, Deitrick, Hofler and Krafft [Phys. Rev. Lett. 112, 074801 (2014); hereafter TDHK]. Research has concentrated on the excitation and stabilization of the beam-breakup (BBU) instability in high current, long-pulse electron beam transport through microwave cavity systems. Electron beams are generated by the Michigan Electron Long Beam Accelerator (MELBA) at parameters: 0.7 to 0.8 MV, I injected =40-400 A, and pulselength - 0.5 Iis.
