It was recently estimated that the strong isospin-symmetry breaking (ISB) corrections to the Fermi matrix element in free neutron decay could be of the order 10^–4, one order of magnitude larger than the naïve estimate based on the Behrends-Sirlin-Ademollo-Gatto theorem. To investigate this claim, we derive a general expression of the leading ISB correction to hadronic Fermi matrix elements, which takes the form of a four-point correlation function in lattice gauge theory and is straightforward to compute from first principles. Our formalism paves the way for the first determination of such correction in the neutron sector with fully-controlled theory uncertainties.

Lattice QCD determination of neutron-antineutron matrix elements with physical quark masses

Matrix elements of six-quark operators are needed to extract new physics constraints from experimental searches for neutron-antineutron oscillations. This work presents, in detail, the first lattice quantum chromodynamics calculations of the necessary neutron-antineutron transition matrix elements including calculation methods and discussions of systematic uncertainties. Implications of isospin and chiral symmetry on the matrix elements, power counting in the isospin limit, and renormalization of a chiral basis of six-quark operators are discussed. Calculations are performed with a chiral-symmetric discretization of the quark action and physical light quark masses in order to avoid the need for chiral extrapolation. We present a locally supersymmetric action for a spinning string interacting with an antisymmetric tensor field. This action incorporates in particular the boundary conditions. Then, we present a first physical application of this action in the context of a string model of mesons; explicitly, we show how it leads at the classical level to effective quarks with spin.

Stranger Still: Kaon Loops and Strange Quark Matrix Elements of the Nucleon

Instrinsic strangeness contributions to low-energy strange quark matrix elements of the nucleon are modelled using kaon loops and meson-nucleon vertex functions taken from nucleon-nucleon and nucleon-hyperon scattering. A comparison with pion loop contributions to the nucleon electromagnetic (EM) form factors indicates the prsence of significant SU-(3)-breaking in the mean-square charge radii. As a numerical consequence, the kaon loop contribution to the mean square Sachs strangeness radius is significantly smaller than could be observed with parity-violating elastic ep experiments planned for CEBAF, while the contribution to the Sachs radius is large enough to be observed with PV electron scattering from (0+,more »« less
