By monitoring the catalytic conversion of methanol using operando synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction (SXRD) and structure refinement, in combination with theoretical calculations, we demonstrate for the first time, that the concerted associative mechanism is responsible for dimethyl ether production via an activated protonated methanol intermediate species over H-ZSM-5 in an early stage of reaction at 200 °C. The minor contribution from the dissociative mechanism of the adsorbed methoxy intermediate species at Brønsted acid sites, renders their accumulation during the late stage of reaction, which leads to a build-up of the ‘hydrocarbon pool’ and eventually to ‘carbon’ through the formation ofmore » C-C bonds.« less

The structure of a zeolite ZSM-5 complex with ca. 4 molecules/unit cell of bithiophene was determined by high-resolution synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction. In adopts monoclinic symmetry in space group P2{sub 1}/n ({alpha} unique) between room temperature and 25 K, with refined lattice parameters at 25 K of a = 20.0614(4), b = 19.8251(4), c = 13.3623(4) {Angstrom}, and a = 90.848(2){degrees}. The crystal structure of the synthetic zeolite silica-ZSM-12, 56 SiO{sub 2}, has been solved by the combined use of high-resolution solid-state MAS NMR spectroscopy and high-resolution synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction ZSM-12 crystallizes in the monoclinic space group C2/c with a{sub 0} = 24.863 {angstrom}, b{sub 0} = 5.012 {angstrom}, c{sub 0} = 24.328 {angstrom}, and {beta} = 107.7{degree}. The zeolite host structure is built from corner-linked SiO{sub 4} tetrahedra to give a three-dimensional 4-connected net. High-resolution nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra and synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction data have been obtained from a well-crystallized highly dealuminated sample of the zeolite ZSM-11. The Rietveld profile technique has been applied to the synchrotron data to give the first detailed refinement of the idealized structure derived ten years ago by distance least-squares modeling methods (G. T. Kokotailo, P. Chu, S. L. Lawton, and W. M. Meier, Nature 275, 119 (1078)), which involves 54 variable atomic positional parameters.
