Title: Phases of inflation

Abstract

Motivated by the 4d effective field theories for closed string axions in Type II string compactifications with D-branes, we consider chiral gauge theories coupled to multiple axions. We discuss how well-known non-perturbative dynamical phenomena, such as gauge instantons, fermion confinement and Nambu-Jona-Lasinio interactions, give rise to non-trivial vacuum configurations in the IR. The fluctuations about the IR vacuum are captured by some remaining closed string axions and infladrons (scalar chiral condensate excitations), which acquire dynamical masses. By employing the full power of the effective field theory, we investigate the applicability of these IR theories as inflationary models (natural, monodromy, Starobinsky) and connect different types of inflationary scenarios to different phases of the non-Abelian gauge theory or the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio four-fermion couplings. The back-reaction of the infladrons flattens the axion potential in natural-like inflationary models, such that the tension with current CMB data with respect to the spectral index and the tensor-to-scalar ratio can be partially alleviated.

We continue our investigation of the 4D effective field theory for closed string axions in type II compactifications with D-branes. The inclusion of Stückelberg couplings for the axions requires the presence of chiral fermions at D-brane intersections, whose interactions at strong non-Abelian gauge coupling induce mass terms for the axions and scalar chiral condensate excitations, dubbed infladrons. The setup allows for a realization of naturallike inflation with a closed string axion as inflaton and a flattened scalar potential due to the backreaction of the more massive infladrons. We further point out that this large field inflationary model is not compromisedmore » by axionic wormhole corrections.« less

Flux flattening in axion monodromy inflation

String theory models of axion monodromy inflation exhibit scalar potentials which are quadratic for small values of the inflaton field and evolve to a more complicated function for large field values. Oftentimes the large field behaviour is gentler than quadratic, lowering the tensor-to-scalar ratio. This effect, known as flattening, has been observed in the string theory context through the properties of the DBI+CS D-brane action. We revisit such flattening effects in type IIB flux compactifications with mobile D7-branes, with the inflaton identified with the D7-brane position. Axion inflation in type II string theory

Inflationary models driven by a large number of axion fields are discussed in the context of type IIB compactifications with N=1 supersymmetry. The inflatons arise as the scalar modes of the R-R two-forms evaluated on vanishing two-cycles in the compact geometry. The vanishing cycles are resolved by small two-volumes or NS-NS B fields which sit together with the inflatons in the same supermultiplets. String world sheets wrapping the vanishing cycles correct the metric of the R-R inflatons. They can help to generate kinetic terms close to the Planck scale and a mass hierarchy between the axions and their nonaxionic partnersmore »« less

Nuclear phenomena derived from quark-gluon strings

We propose a quantum chromodynamics (QCD) based many-body model for the nucleus where the strong coupling regime is controlled by a three-body string force, and the weak coupling regime is dominated by a pairing force. This model operates effectively with a quark-gluon Lagrangian containing a pairing force from instantons, and a baryonic string term which contains a confining potential. The unified model for weak and strong coupling regimes is, however, only consistent at the border of perturbative QCD. The baryonic string force is necessary, as a stability and compressibility analysis shows, for the occurrence of the phases of nuclear matter.more »« less

Gravity waves and linear inflation from axion monodromy

Wrapped branes in string compactifications introduce a monodromy that extends the field range of individual closed-string axions to beyond the Planck scale. Furthermore, approximate shift symmetries of the system naturally control corrections to the axion potential. This suggests a general mechanism for chaotic inflation driven by monodromy-extended closed-string axions. We systematically analyze this possibility and show that the mechanism is compatible with moduli stabilization and can be realized in many types of compactifications, including warped Calabi-Yau manifolds and more general Ricci-curved spaces.
