A new testing methodology was developed to quantitively study galvanic corrosion of AZ31B and thermoset carbon-fiber–reinforced polymer spot-joined by a friction self-piercing riveting process. Pre-defined areas of AZ31B in the joint were exposed in 0.1 M NaCl solution over time. Massive galvanic corrosion of AZ31B was observed as exposure time increased. The measured volume loss was converted into corrosion current that was at least 48 times greater than the corrosion current of AZ31B without galvanic coupling. Ninety percent of the mechanical joint integrity was retained for corroded F-SPR joints to 200 h and then decreased because of the massive volumemore » loss of AZ31B.« less

In the present work, thermoset carbon fiber–reinforced polymer (CFRP) was spot joined to magnesium alloy AZ31B by a friction self-piercing riveting (F-SPR) process. Lap shear tensile and cross-tension testing were used to evaluate the mechanical joint performance. An average lap shear tensile load of 5.18 kN was achieved, while an average of 2.81 kN was found from cross-tension testing. Interfacial bond characterization of epoxy adhesives to aluminum alloy and carbon fiber-reinforced polyamide by vibrational spectroscopy

Vibrational spectroscopic technique has been utilized to investigate interfacial bonding chemistry of two epoxy adhesive products, XP0012 and XP5005F, on plasma-treated AA6061 and carbon fiber-reinforced polyamide 66 (CFRP-PA66) surfaces. The change in vibrational peak ratios was measured by attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy to deduce bonding mechanisms. Both adhesives showed strong crosslinking polymerization of hydroxyl- and amine-initiated epoxy ring opening on AA6061 surface, but on CFRP surface XP0012 formed a simple amide linkage by the reaction of surface hydroxyl groups and nitrile groups of curing agent, and XP5005F formed a crosslinked network by hydroxyl-initiated epoxy ring opening polymerization.more »« less

Mitigation of Galvanic Corrosion in Bolted Joint of AZ31B and Carbon Fiber-Reinforced Composite Using Polymer Insulation

The use of polymer insulation to mitigate galvanic corrosion was examined for bolted joints of AZ31B Mg alloy and carbon fiber-reinforced composite. To assess the corrosion behaviors of bolted joints with and without polymer insulation, solution immersion and salt spray exposure (ASTM B117) tests were conducted, and the corrosion depths and volumes were determined for the joint specimens after the tests. The polymer-insulated bolted joints exhibited much lower corrosion depths and volumes, highlighting the effective mitigation of galvanic corrosion.
