We report on the comparative experimental investigation on third- and fifth-harmonic generation (THG and FHG) in atomic and molecular gases driven by midinfrared ultrafast laser pulses at a wavelength of {approx}1500 nm. We observe that the conversion efficiencies of both the THG and FHG processes saturate at similar peak intensities close to {approx}1.5 x 10{sup 14} W/cm{sup 2} for argon, nitrogen, and air, whose ionization potentials are close to each other. Third order nonlinearity in pulsed laser deposited LiNbO{sub 3} thin films

Lithium niobate (LiNbO{sub 3}) thin films were prepared using pulsed laser deposition technique. Structural properties of the same were examined from XRD and optical band gap of the thin films were measured from transmittance spectra recorded using UV-Visible spectrophotometer. Nonlinear optical properties of the thin films were recorded using Z-Scan technique. The films were exhibiting third order nonlinearity and their corresponding two photon absorption, nonlinear refractive index, real and imaginary part of nonlinear susceptibility were calculated from open aperture and closed aperture transmission curves. From these studies, it suggests that these films have potential applications in nonlinear optical devices.

Third order autocorrelation study of amplified subpicosecond laser pulses

The authors have used the well-known optical Kerr effect shutter method to determine the temporal width and shape of subpicosecond pulses issued from a passively mode-locked CW dye laser, feeding a three stage amplifier. This technique corresponds to a third order correlation measurement and thus yields information on the pulse profile and especially about a possible asymmetry. The accuracy of results greatly benefits from the large dynamic range that reaches 10/sup 3/.

Fast electron propagation in Ti foils irradiated with sub-picosecond laser pulses at Iλ{sup 2}>10{sup 18} Wcm{sup −2}μm{sup 2}

We have studied the propagation of fast electrons through laser irradiated Ti foils by monitoring the emission of hard X-rays and K-α radiation from bare foils and foils backed by a thick epoxy layer. Key observations include strong refluxing of electrons and divergence of the electron beam in the foil with evidence of magnetic field collimation. Our diagnostics have allowed us to estimate the fast electron temperature and fraction of laser energy converted to fast electrons. We have observed clear differences between the fast electron temperatures observed with bare and epoxy backed targets which may be due to the effectsmore » of refluxing.« less
