Carbonate stromatolites within siliciclastic deposits: A wealth of paleoenvironmental information

Stromatolites, constructed of both calcite and dolomite, occur encased in Pennsylvanian-age siliciclastic lacustrine deposits of southeastern Ohio. As a result of their occurrence and preservation within noncarbonate rock, detailed and somewhat unique paleoenvironmental and diagenetic interpretations are possible. Analyses including stratigraphic, petrographic, X-ray diffraction, microprobe and stable isotopes provide information regarding the microbial community, sedimentation and growth rates, energy, environmental control on stromatolite morphology, and paleosalinity fluctuations. Spherical oncoids, convex-upward hemispheroids and stacked disks which are interbedded with quartz sandstone display internal structure of up to six generations of basal laminae overlain by laminated columns. Differing styles of stromatolite diagenesis: Implication for stromatolite origin and diagenesis of Upper Cambrian peritidal carbonates

Stromatolite morphology and the characteristics of associated sediments are commonly used to discern environments of stromatolite formation. In this study, the authors suggest that study of stromatolite diagenesis allows a better understanding of the origin of stromatolites and the diagenesis of carbonate sediments. The Upper Cambrian Maynardville Formation of the Conasauga Group in Tennessee consists of subtidal and peritidal carbonate lithologies. Organic carbon preserved in Precambrian stromatolites has delta/sup 13/C values typically in the range -19 to -35, whereas microbial mats growing today in marine hypersaline environments have delta/sup 13/C values in the range -6 to -14. This /sup 13/C shift has been attributed to selective preservation of isotopically light organics, a decline in atmospheric CO/sub 2/ levels, or the restriction of microbial stromatolitic communities to hypersaline environments in the Phanerozoic due to grazing pressures in lower salinity environments.
