We study modular Hamiltonians corresponding to the vacuum state for deformed half-spaces in relativistic quantum field theories on R^1,d-1. We show that in addition to the usual boost generator, there is a contribution to the modular Hamiltonian at first order in the shape deformation, proportional to the integral of the null components of the stress tensor along the Rindler horizon. We use this fact along with monotonicity of relative entropy to prove the averaged null energy condition in Minkowski space-time. Quantum null energy condition, entanglement wedge nesting, and quantum focusing

We study the consequences of entanglement wedge nesting for conformal field theories (CFTs) with holographic duals. The CFT is formulated on an arbitrary curved background, and we include the effects of curvature-squared couplings in the bulk. In this setup we find necessary and sufficient conditions for entanglement wedge nesting to imply the quantum null energy condition in d ≤ 5, extending its earlier holographic proofs. We also show that the quantum focusing conjecture yields the quantum null energy condition as its nongravitational limit under these same conditions.

A Rényi quantum null energy condition: proof for free field theories

The Quantum Null Energy Condition (QNEC) is a lower bound on the stress-energy tensor in quantum field theory that has been proved quite generally. It can equivalently be phrased as a positivity condition on the second null shape derivative of the relative entropy S_rel(ρ||σ) of an arbitrary state ρ with respect to the vacuum σ. The relative entropy has a natural one-parameter family generalization, the Sandwiched Rényi divergence S_n(ρ||σ), which also measures the distinguishability of two states for arbitrary n ∈ [1/2, ∞).
