The competition between antiferromagnetic (AF) order and singlet formation is a central phenomenon of the Kondo and Periodic Anderson Hamiltonians, and of the heavy fermion materials they describe. In this paper, we explore the effects of an additional conduction band on magnetism in these models, and, specifically, on changes in the AF-singlet quantum critical point (QCP) and the one particle and spin spectral functions. To understand the magnetic phase transition qualitatively, we first carry out a self-consistent mean field theory (MFT). The Kondo and periodic Anderson models describe many of the qualitative features of local moments coupled to a conduction band, and thereby the physics of materials such as the heavy fermions. In particular, when the exchange coupling J or hybridization V between the moments and the electrons of the metallic band is large, singlets form, quenching the magnetism. In the opposite, small J or V, limit, the moments survive and the conduction electrons mediate an effective interaction which can trigger long-range, often antiferromagnetic order. Magnetic correlations in a periodic Anderson model with nonuniform conduction electron coordination

The periodic Anderson model is widely studied to understand strong correlation physics and especially the competition of antiferromagnetism and singlet formation. In this paper we extend quantum Monte Carlo work on lattices with uniform numbers of neighbors to geometries in which the conduction electron sites can have variable coordination z. This situation is relevant both to recently discovered magnetic quasicrystals and also to magnetism in doped heavy fermion systems. Our key results are the presence of antiferromagnetic order at weak interorbital hybridization V_fd, and a delay in singlet formation to larger values of V_fd on sites with larger z. Inmore »« less

Coherence temperature in the diluted periodic Anderson model

The Kondo and periodic Anderson model (PAM) are known to provide a microscopic picture of many of the fundamental properties of heavy-fermion materials and, more generally, a variety of strong correlation phenomena in 4f and 5f systems. Here, we apply the determinant quantum Monte Carlo method to include disorder in the PAM, specifically the removal of a fraction x of the localized orbitals. We determine the evolution of the coherence temperature T*, where the local moments and conduction electrons become entwined in a heavy-fermion fluid, with x and with the hybridization V between localized and conduction orbitals.
