Density fluctuations in the large-density-gradient region of improved confinement Madison Symmetric Torus reversed field pinch (RFP) plasmas exhibit multiple features that are characteristic of the trapped-electron mode (TEM). Core transport in conventional RFP plasmas is governed by magnetic stochasticity stemming from multiple long-wavelength tearing modes. Using inductive current profile control, these tearing modes are reduced, and global confinement is increased to that expected for comparable tokamak plasmas. Evidence for drift waves in the turbulence of reversed field pinch plasmas

A detailed characterization of the high-frequency range of the fluctuation spectrum in reversed field pinch plasmas is presented, revealing a variety of new features distinct from global tearing modes and the cascade that they are thought to drive. The anisotropic broadband spectrum of the fluctuating electric field is measured. The power in the fluctuating kinetic energy (1/2) m(i)n(i)(V) over tilde (2)((E) over tilde xB0), previously measured to be smaller than the magnetic energy in the tearing-mode-unstable frequency range, becomes greater than and diverges from the magnetic energy above 60-80 kHz. Electron Bernstein wave emission from an over-dense reversed field pinch plasma

Blackbody levels of emission in the electron cyclotron range of frequencies have been observed from an over-dense Madison symmetric torus (MST) reversed field pinch plasma, a result of electrostatic electron bernstein waves (EBW) emitted from the core and mode converted into electromagnetic waves at the extreme plasma edge. Comparison of the measured radiation temperature with profiles measured by Thomson scattering indicates that the mode conversion efficiency can be as high as {approx}75%. Emission is preferentially in the X-mode polarization, and is strongly dependent upon the density and magnetic field profiles at the mode conversion point.
Magnetic and velocity fluctuations from nonlinearly coupled tearing modes in the reversed field pinch with and without the reversal surface

Here, we investigate the role of poloidal mode number m = 0 fluctuations on m = 1 velocity and magnetic field fluctuations in the Reversed Field Pinch (RFP). Removing the m = 0 resonant surface in the Madison Symmetric Torus (MST), results in suppressed m = 0 activity without a reduction in m = 1 magnetic activity. However, the m = 1 velocity fluctuations and fluctuation-induced mean emf are reduced as m = 0 modes are suppressed. Velocity fluctuations are measured directly using fast Doppler spectroscopy. Direct Observation of Electron-Bernstein Wave Heating by O-X-B-Mode Conversion at Low Magnetic Field in the WEGA Stellarator

The ordinary-extraordinary-Bernstein-mode conversion process for overdense plasma heating with electron-Bernstein waves is demonstrated in the WEGA stellarator at low magnetic field ({approx}50 mT) at 2.45 GHz. For the first time the conversion from an O wave to an X wave is clearly demonstrated by probe measurements of amplitude and phase of the wave field in the conversion region and supported by two-dimensional full-wave calculations. The propagation and resonant absorption of the Bernstein wave is measured in fast power modulation experiments.
