Sulfate reduction and the accumulation of reduced sulfur in epilimnetic sediments were studied in lakes in southern Norway, the Adirondack Mountains, and at the Experimental Lakes Area (ELA) of northwestern Ontario. In all of the lakes, sulfate reduction produced substantial quantities of pyrite and organic sulfur compounds. In 9-month in situ experiments at ELA using /sup 35/S, there was a large loss (55%) with time of the S initially reduced and deposited in the sediments and a preferential loss of inorganic S compounds which led to a predominance of organic /sup 35/S accumulation in the sediments. Most sulfur diagenesis models predict that porewater SO{sub 4}{sup 2{minus}} concentrations will decrease exponentially with increasing sediment depth and will be lower than that of the overlying water throughout the sediments. Sulfate concentrations below 0.2 mM are common in Lake Anna sediments which receive acid mine drainage; however, sediment porewater containing up to 29 mM SO{sub 4}{sup 2{minus}} is also seen at about 20 cm below the sediment surface in this section of the lake. Over 300 samples from the Shell Beach section of the Monterey Formation were analyzed for their mineralogical and chemical composition. This basinal section includes a variety of lithologies, mainly organic-rich shales, siliceous shales, porcelanites, dolomitic shales, and dolomites. According to Khan and co-workers, the undecompacted sedimentation rate at this site is 100 m/m.y. The organic C content (carbonate free) of these sediments is very high, averaging 8.3 wt. %.
