The seasonal sea ice field of the Southern Ocean strongly modulates climate through its insulating effect and high albedo. Consequently, it plays a significant role in global climate and must be adequately parameterized for inclusion in large-scale circulation models attempting to predict the nature of global change. Recent field studies and modeling work show that the ice field is highly sensitive to the static stability and vertical fluxes in the Southern Ocean water column. Deep Ocean Heat Uptake and the Influence of Sea Ice in the Southern Ocean

Climate sensitivity defines the equilibrium response to climate forcing, but ocean heat uptake is equally important at controlling the transient, response. Heat stored beneath the mixed layer is not in close thermal contact with the atmosphere, and therefore warming below the mixed layer sequesters heat that would otherwise be available to warm the surface, slowing the rate of surface warming. In this study, we investigate mechanisms that control heat uptake, primarily in the Southern Ocean, where roughly 40% of the global heat uptake occurs.

A strengthening of the Amundsen Sea low from 1979 to 2013 has been shown to largely explain the observed increase in Antarctic sea ice concentration in the eastern Ross Sea and decrease in the Bellingshausen Sea. Here it is shown that while these changes are not generally seen in freely running coupled climate model simulations, they are reproduced in simulations of two independent coupled climate models: one constrained by observed sea surface temperature anomalies in the tropical Pacific and the other by observed surface wind stress in the tropics. Numerical study of the response of the Southern Ocean and its sea ice to a CO/sub 2/-induced atmospheric warming

A comprehensive coupled model of ocean circulation and sea ice has been developed to study a selected area of the Southern Ocean that includes the Weddell Sea and the Drake Passage. An existing general circulation model of the ocean was configured for the geometry of the Southern Ocean domain and then improved by including robust-diagnostic forcing and allowing for coupling to a sea-ice model. When the model was initially tested without coupling, the ocean circulation corresponded well with the observed circulation.
