The formation and subsequent changes of aerosols arising during the irradiation of gaseous organic substances by fast electrons under various conditions were investigated by the light beam method. Aerosol particles formed from methane were found to possess radii several microns long and carry both positive and negative charges from 1 to 11 elementary units, the majority (66%) being charged with from 1 to 3 units. Mixtures of styrene and sulfur dioxide were irradiated with Co/sup 60/ gamma rays at various temperatures between +30 and -78 deg C. This led to two completely different polymerization reactions, one radical leading to the formntion of polysulfones and the other ionic leading to the formation of pure polystyrene. The ionic part of the reaction was favored by a decrease in the reaction temperature and by an increase of the sulfur dioxide concentration in the feed. BS>Copolymers from styrene and sulfur dioxide were prepared at room temperature by Co/sup 60/ gamma rays. The products formed have the same composition, one molecule of sulfur dioxide per two styrene units, and the same kinetics of formation over a wide range of concentration as the polystyrenesulfones prepared by radical catalysts. Above 80 mol% SO/sub 2/ in the feed there can be observed an additional ionic homopolymerization of styrene in SO/sub 2/ solution which becomes more and more important at higher SO/sub 2/ concentrations in the feed.
