Structure and properties development during the conversion of polyethylene precursors to carbon fibers

In this study, the differences of structure and properties development during stabilization and carbonization between highly oriented and partially oriented polyethylene precursors were investigated. The effect of stabilization temperatures, time and tension on conversion process was studied using thermal analysis such as differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, single filament mechanical properties. Comparison of resultant carbon fibers from these two kinds of precursor fibers showed that using partially oriented polyethylene precursor may reduce the stabilization time and temperature, being diffusion-controlled process of sulfonation for stabilization. The mechanical properties of the resultant carbon fibers were evaluated.
Effect of Carbon Fiber Surface Modification on the Mechanical Properties of Carbon-Fiber-Reinforced Ultrahigh-Molecular-Weight Polyethylene Composite

In this paper, the surface properties and morphologies of the concentrated nitric acid (HNO{sub 3})-modified carbon fiber (CF) were characterized by XPS, SEM, and contact angle goniometer, respectively. The results showed that both the oxygen-containing functional groups content and the surface roughness of concentrated HNO{sub 3}-modified CF significantly increased. The contact angle of concentrated HNO{sub 3}-modified CF was obviously lower than that of unmodified CF. Discovering Biomass Structural Determinants Defining the Properties of Plant-Derived Renewable Carbon Fiber

Traditional lignocellulosic feedstock research has focused on biomass characteristics essential for improving saccharification efficiency, yet the key biomass features underlying high-quality renewable lignin materials remain unknown. Nevertheless, modern biorefinery cannot achieve sustainability and cost-effectiveness unless the lignin stream can be valorized. We hereby addressed these scientific gaps by investigating biomass characteristics defining lignin-based carbon materials properties. Lignin from eight sorghum samples with diverse characteristics was fabricated into carbon fibers (CFs). Remarkably, only lignin uniformity was found to define CF mechanical performance, highlighting the new structureproperty relationship.
