A stylized pressurized water reactor (PWR) benchmark problem with UO{sub 2} and MOX fuel was used to test the accuracy and efficiency of the coarse mesh radiation transport (COMET) code. The benchmark problem contains 125 fuel assemblies and 44,000 fuel pins. The COMET code was used to compute the core eigenvalue and assembly and pin power distributions for three core configurations. In these calculations, a set of tensor products of orthogonal polynomials were used to expand the neutron angular phase space distribution on the interfaces between coarse meshes. A modified Borresen coarse-mesh computation for a three-dimensional pressurized water reactor benchmark problem

A modification is made with regard to the thermal group treatment of Borresen's coarse-mesh method by using the nodal interface flux obtained from an analytical procedure as well as the node-dependent thermal group weight factors for the enumeration of the node average thermal group flux. From the numerical studies of the three-dimensional International Atomic Energy Agency benchmark problem, it is shown that the modification results in an improved accuracy in the gross power computation of the three-dimensional pressurized water reactor problem.

The European Pressurized Water Reactor (EPR) is a project for the development of an advanced PWR pursued by Electricite de France and the major German utilities (RWEE, PreussenElektra, BAG et. al.) together with SIEMENS, Framatome and their common subsidiary NPI. In this project, the experience gained through the design, the erection, the commissioning and the operation of the existing PWR in France and Germany are combined and the existing technical solutions were carefully checked before adopted for the EPR.
