Job scheduling and machine layout are interrelated in improving energy consumption (EC) and productivity measures such as tardiness and represent two important decisions that must be made by manufacturers. This interdependency can be explained by transportation time, which connects scheduling and layout. Most sustainable manufacturing studies have discussed scheduling with energy consumption (EC), while the effect of layout on both scheduling and EC can be significant. This paper therefore investigates the interaction between layout and scheduling in a flexible job shop, and shows how considering them together affects EC (energy cost) and a conventional performance measure (tardiness cost). A mixed-integer nonlinear programming is proposed in this study to integrate layout with scheduling, and the objective function of the model is designed to minimize total tardiness and energy cost. An operation support expert system based on on-line dynamics simulation and fuzzy reasoning for startup schedule optimization in fossil power plants

An expert system which can support operators of fossil power plants in creating the optimum startup schedule and executing it accurately is described. The optimum turbine speed-up and load-up pattern is obtained through an iterative manner which is based on fuzzy resonating using quantitative calculations as plant dynamics models and qualitative knowledge as schedule optimization rules with fuzziness. The rules represent relationships between stress margins and modification rates of the schedule parameters. Simulations analysis proves that the system provides quick and accurate plant startups.

Dravo Lime Company has operated the Miami Fort wet scrubber FGD pilot test unit since late 1989 and has continued in-house R&D to improve the economics of the magnesium-enhanced scrubbing process. Areas investigated include the scrubber configuration, flue gas velocity, spray nozzle type, droplet size, mist eliminator design, additives to inhibit oxidation, improved solids dewatering, etc. Also tested was the forced oxidation Thioclear process.
