The chartreuse monoclinic Ni-dpbz (Ni(L)[Ni(CN)₄], (L = 1,4-Bis(4-pyridyl)benzene, or dpbz) crystal assumes a pillared structure with layers defined by 2-D Ni[Ni(CN)₄]_n nets and dpbz ligands as pillars, linking between coordinated Ni sites. In addition to the hysteretic adsorption/desorption feature of Ni-dpbz, in half of the parallelepiped-shape space enclosed by the pillars and nets, an additional dpbz ligand was found to link between the open ends of two four-fold Ni sites. This arrangement results in an unusual 5-fold pseudo square-pyramid environment for Ni and a significantly long Ni–N distance of 2.369(4) Å. The monoclinic (Ni(L)[Ni(CN)₄] (L= 1,4-Bis(4-pyridyl) benzene) compound (defined as Ni-dpbz) is a flexible metal organic framework which assumes a pillared structure with layers defined by 2D Ni[Ni(CN)₄]_n nets and dpbz ligands as pillars. The structure features an entrapped dpbz ligand that links between the open ends of four-fold Ni sites from two neighboring chains. This arrangement results in an unusual 5-fold pseudo square-pyramid environment for Ni and a significantly long Ni-N distance of 2.369(4) Å. This paper reports our synthesis of flexible coordination polymer, Ni(L)[Ni(CN)₄], (L = 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethylene (nicknamed bpene)), and its structural characterization using synchrotron single crystal X-ray diffraction. The structure of the purplish crystals has been determined to be monoclinic, space group P2₁/m, a = 13.5941(12) Å, b = 14.3621(12) Å, c = 14.2561(12) Å, β = 96.141(2)°, V = 2767.4(4) Å³, Z = 4, D_c = 1.46 g cm^-1. Iodine charge-transfer salts of benzene-bridged bis(1,2,3,5-diselenadiazolyl) diradicals. Electrocrystallization and solid-state characterization of 1,3- and 1,4-[(Se{sub 2}N{sub 2}C)C{sub 6}H{sub 4}(CN{sub 2}Se{sub 2})] [I]

Electroreduction of 1,3-and 1,4-benzene-bridged bis(diselenadiazolium) salts [1,4-Se][SbF{sub 6}]{sub 2} and [1,4-Se][SbF{sub 6}]{sub 2} in acetonitrile, at a Pt wire and in the presence of iodine affords the 1:1 charge-transfer salts [1,4-Se][I] and [1,3-Se][I]. The structures of the two 1:1 compounds consist of perfectly superimposed stacks of molecular units interspersed by columns of disordered iodines. Interstack contacts in both structures are limited, indicative of 1-dimensional electronic structures. Variable-temperature single-crystal conductivity measurements on [1,4-Se][I] reveal weakly metallic behavior at room temperature, with a phase transition to a semiconducting state occurring at about 240 K.
