Oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) nickel-base alloys are considered to be potential candidate materials for high temperature applications in excess of 1,000 C. Their extraordinary creep resistance results from a beneficial superposition of strengthening by incoherent, finely dispersed oxide particles, which effectively interact with dislocations and of coarse, elongated grains suppressing grain boundary sliding. While these mechanisms have been convincingly discussed in the literature, the influence of texture on creep strength has not been treated equally systematically due to the lack of varying the grain orientation or texture independently on the grain structure during the final recrystallization heat treatment. Design, Creep Performance and Deformation Behavior of an Eta-Phase Strengthened Nickel-Base Alloy for A-USC Power Plant Applications

By utilizing computational thermodynamics in a Design of Experiments approach, it was possible to design and manufacture nickel-base superalloys that are strengthened by the eta phase (Ni3Ti), and that contain no gamma prime (Ni3Al,Ti). The compositions are similar to Nimonic 263, and should be cost-effective, and have more stable microstructures. By varying the aging temperature, the precipitates took on either cellular or Widmanstätten morphologies. The Widmanstätten-based microstructure is thermally stable at high temperatures, and was found to have superior ductility, so development efforts were focused on that microstructure. Cyclic creep and stress rupture of a mechanically alloyed oxide dispersion and precipitation strengthened nickel-base superalloy

Cyclic creep and stress rupture results of Inconel MA 6000E are reported and discussed as a function of frequency, Inconel MA 6000E, a new alloy system developed for high creep resistance at intermediate as well as at high temperatures, is a mechanically alloyed oxide dispersion (about 2.5 vol pct) and ..gamma.. precipitation (about 50 vol pct) strengthened superalloy. A decrease in the minimum strain rate and increase in the rupture life accompany cyclic frequency increase.
