Correlated Strontium and Barium Isotopic Compositions of Acid-Cleaned Single Mainstream Silicon Carbides from Murchison

Herein we present strontium, barium, carbon, and silicon isotopic compositions of 61 acid-cleaned presolar SiC grains from Murchison. Comparison with previous data shows that acid washing is highly effective in removing both strontium and barium contamination. For the first time, by using correlated ⁸⁸Sr/⁸⁶Sr and ¹³⁸Ba/¹³⁶Ba ratios in mainstream SiC grains, we are able to resolve the effect of ¹³C concentration from that of ¹³C-pocket mass on s-process nucleosynthesis, which points toward the existence of large ¹³C pockets with low ¹³C concentrations in asymptotic giant branch stars. Diffusion of silver and cesium in silicon-carbide coatings of fuel particles for high-temperature gas-cooled reactors

Fractional releases of silver and cesium from irradiated silicon-carbide-layered coated particles have been measured during isothermal anneals in the temperature range between 1273 and 1773 K. The release rates measured have been evaluated with the aid of a statistical numerical treatment based on a simple diffusion model in multizone geometry. The resulting diffusion coefficients are described for silver and for cesium. A statistical treatment of the data gives corresponding 95% confidence limits. Distribution ratios were determined for sorption--desorption of radioactive tracers between the Climax Stock granite (quartz monzonite porphyry) obtained at Nevada Test Site and a water prepared to be resonably representative of the natural composition of water in equilibrium with the Climax Stock granite. The measurements were performed at 22 and 70{sup 0}C under atmospheric oxygen conditions. Elements given in order of increasing distribution coefficient at ambient temperature are: U(VI), Sr, Tc(VII), Ba, Ce(III), Cs, Eu(III), Pu, and Am.
