Raman scattering measurements of single-walled carbon nanotubes prepared by laser ablation with Ni/Co catalyst show that samples that have not been purified have a graphitic mode frequency that is 8 cm{sup -1} lower than that of samples from which most of the catalyst has been removed. The shift is attributed to charge transfer from the catalyst particles to the nanotubes. The charge transfer from the residual catalyst also affects the temperature dependence of the radial breathing mode.

The theoretical analysis of electrostatic sound wave modes in multiwalled carbon nanotubes is presented within the framework of the fluid theory in conjunction with the Poisson's equation. The electron and ion components of each wall of nanotubes are regarded as two-species plasma system, in which the perturbed electron number density is deduced by means of the quantum hydrodynamic model, while the ion density perturbation follows the classical expression. An analytical expression of the dispersion relation is obtained for the quantum ion-acoustic wave oscillations in the system. Vibrational modes of carbon nanotubes and nanoropes

The vibrational modes of carbon nanotubes and nanoropes are studied. The Raman and infrared active modes are determined for armchair, zigzag, and chiral nanotubes. High-energy Raman and infrared modes exhibit distinct characteristic patterns for armchair, zigzag, and chiral tubes. In the nanorope the intertube interactions shifts the energy of certain vibrational modes dramatically. This has implications when using the vibrational spectra to identify tubes. In the nanorope we find Raman modes exhibit shifts under a change in pressure which differ from the corresponding shifts found in graphite.
