Benthic macroinvertebrate populations were studied from May, 1970 to June, 1975 in the vicinity of the Monroe power plant on western Lake Erie. Samples were collected with a Ponar dredge and subsequently washed free of sediments in a 0.5 mm diameter wire screen tub. One-way analysis of variance and Tukey's multiple range comparison tests were used to assess apparent differences in densities, mean sizes, and age ratios. Although eight major taxonomic groups were collected during the study, two groups (Tubificidae and Chironomidae) comprised 99% of the total organisms. Response of wetland herb communities to gradients of disturbance and substrate

The effect of thermal disturbance and site characteristics on the distribution of herbs was studied in portions of a 3020 ha wetland in the southeastern U.S. Data were collected from four sites with different disturbance histories. Rank correlations between DCA ordination scores and site characteristics indicate that species composition differences among sites were associated with disturbance. Within site differences are related to water depth and substrate type. For all sites along the disturbance gradient, species richness is greatest on consolidated muck. We evaluated the ecological effectiveness of an in-stream restoration project involving coarse woody debris (CWD) additions to streams along an upland soil and vegetation disturbance gradient at the Fort Benning Military Installation near Columbus, GA. We examined short-term (immediate effectiveness) and longer-term (sustainability) responses to CWD additions by measuring ecosystem metabolism rates in 8 streams quarterly over a 6-year period, including 3 years before (2001–2003) and 3 years after (2004–2006) CWD additions that were made to half of the streams.
