α- and β-D-glucopyranose monoacetates 1–3 were prepared with selective ¹³C enrichment in the O-acetyl side-chain, and ensembles of ¹³C–¹H and ¹³C–¹³C NMR spin-couplings (J-couplings) were measured involving the labeled carbons. Density functional theory (DFT) was applied to a set of model structures to determine which J-couplings are sensitive to rotation of the ester bond θ. Eight J-couplings (¹J_CC, ²J_CH, ²J_CC, ³J_CH, and ³J_CC) were found to be sensitive to θ, and four equations were parametrized to allow quantitative interpretations of experimental J-values. Conformational analysis of carbohydrate nitrates and the dependence of their vibrational spectrum on the type of nitro group rotamer

A conformational analysis of the nitro groups was undertaken in terms of an additive model of the interatomic interactions. The frequencies of the vibrational spectra of the 2,3,6-tri-0-nitro-..beta..-D-glucopyranose were calculated for all the obtained types of rotamers with respect to the nitro groups. During discussion of the results the regions in which the vibrations appear are indicated, and the sensitivity of the various vibrational frequencies to the conformation of nitro groups, localized at C/sub 2/ and C/sub 3/, is analyzed. Conformation of the progesterone side chain: resolution of the apparent conflict between X-ray data and force-field calculations using MM2

This communication shows that the apparent discrepancy of 0/sup 0/ to -46/sup 0/ for the value for tau (the C(16)-C(17)-C(20)-O(20) torsional angle) calculated from X-ray data and force-field calculations, is due to the use of an inadequate force-field model and that the putative discrepancies are not observed when energy refinement using MM2CDC is employed.
