We have studied the growth and structure of thin TiO{sub {ital x}} films on W(110) using Auger electron spectroscopy, low energy electron diffraction (LEED), and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Interaction of electrons with chiral matter gives rise to interesting phenomena such as the chirality-induced spin selectivity. The interdependence of reflectivity of spin-polarized low energy electrons and the absolute handedness of chiral molecules is investigated. First, the growth of homochiral films of helical aromatic hydrocarbons, so-called helicenes, on a Cu(100) surface is studied by means of low energy electron microscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy in ultrahigh vacuum. The interfacial and surface properties of thin Fe and Gd films grown on W(110) as studied by scanning tunneling microscopy, site-resolved photoelectron diffraction, and spin polarized photoelectron diffraction

Combined scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and low energy electron diffraction (LEED) measurements from Gd films grown on W(110) prepared with and without annealing have been used to provide a detailed picture of the growth of such films, permitting a quantitative structural explanation for previously-measured magnetic properties and the identification of a new two-dimensional structure for the first monolayer. The analysis of the film roughness of room-temperature-grown films as a function of coverage and lateral length scale reveals that the growing Gd surface follows scaling laws for a self-affine surface. Magnetic domain wall contrast under zero domain contrast conditions in spin polarized low energy electron microscopy

Critical applications of spin polarized low energy electron microscopy (SPLEEM) employ this technique's vector imaging capability to resolve domain wall (DW) spin textures. Studying several thin film systems including Co/W(110), Co/Cu(001) and (Co/Ni)_n/W(110), we demonstrate that an additional contrast can appear at magnetic DWs. By imaging the magnetization as a function of electron landing energy, electron energies are selected at which the magnetic domain contrast vanishes. Surprisingly, under such conditions of zero contrast between magnetic domains, we observe the appearance of magnetic contrast outlining the DWs. This DW contrast fails to depend on the DW spin texture. Instead, our measurementsmore »« less
