The geodesic acoustic mode (GAM) is studied in noncircular, finite aspect ratio, toroidal plasmas with a gyrokinetic theory and a local magnetohydrodynamics equilibrium model. Dependencies of the GAM frequency on finite aspect ratio and elongation are investigated when trapped particle effects are neglected in the large aspect ratio limit. It is found that the GAM frequency sharply decreases with an increasing elongation by dependence of [2/({kappa}{sup 2}+1)]{sup 1/2} and slightly decreases with an increasing inverse aspect ratio by dependence of about 1-3{epsilon}{sup 2}/4, where {kappa} and {epsilon} are the plasma elongation and inverse aspect ratio. Geodesic acoustic modes (GAMs) are low frequency modes that were first predicted theoretically to occur in magnetically confined toroidal plasmas and found later in simulations of tokamak edge plasmas. They have been observed in various toroidal devices. Thus, investigating the source of excitation of these modes has been a very active area of research. Recently, we have addressed the issue of nonlinear excitation of these modes by three-wave resonant mode coupling to electron drift waves. We have extended this work to include finite beta effects. A set of reduced linear equations for the description of low-frequency perturbations in toroidally rotating plasma in axisymmetric tokamak is derived in the framework of ideal magnetohydrodynamics. The model suitable for the study of global geodesic acoustic modes (GGAMs) is designed. An example of the use of the developed model for derivation of the integral conditions for GGAM existence and of the corresponding dispersion relation is presented. The toroidal symmetry of the geodesic acoustic mode (GAM) zonal flows is identified with toroidally distributed three step Langmuir probes at the edge of the HuanLiuqi-2A (commonly referred to as HL-2A) tokamak plasmas for the first time. High coherence of both the GAM and the ambient turbulence for the toroidally displaced measurements along a magnetic field line is observed, in contrast with the high coherence of the GAM but low coherence of the ambient turbulence when the toroidally displaced measurements are not along the same field line. Spontaneous excitation of geodesic acoustic mode by toroidal Alfvén eigenmodes

Spontaneous nonlinear excitation of geodesic acoustic mode (GAM) by toroidal Alfvén eigenmodes (TAE) is studied within the framework of gyrokinetic theory. The dispersion relation for the parametric decays of a pump TAE mode into a TAE lower sideband and a GAM is derived. It is shown that, in the ideal MHD first stability region, the condition for spontaneous excitation of GAM by TAEs is ω20 > V2A/(4q2R20), in which, ω0 is the pump TAE real frequency, V A is the Alfvén speed, q is the safety factor and R0 is the torus major radius.
