The cathodic and anodic potentiostatic polarization curves of titanium and its alloys in sulfuric and hydrochloric acid solutions were investigated. It is shown that an increase in acid concentration causes an increase in the passivation current and a shift of the total passivation potential in the direction of positive values. An increase in temperature has the same effect. The cathodic hydrogen overvoltage is considerably lower (by 350-400 mv) for platinum and palladium alloys of titanium. As a result the steady state potential of the alloys undergoes a positive shift falling in the region of partial or complete passivation of titanium.more »« less

The corrosion behavior of titanium is determined by the presence of a protective oxide film on its surface. The halide ions Cl/sup -/ and Br/sup -/ in sulfuric acid in an atmosphere of air and of hydrogen have a double effect on the corrosion of titanium activating it in dilute acid solutions and retarding the corrosion in more concentrated solutions. In all sulfuric acid solutions studied I/sup -/ ions passivate titanium in air, whereas in hydrogen this is true only for concentrated solutions. Effect of contact with titanium on the resistance of structural materials to general and pitting corrosion in corrosive media

The authors investigate the corrosion behavior of steels 12Kh18N10T, 03Kh18N11, 08Kh21N6M2T, 10Kh17N13M2T, 06KhN28MDT, and 03Kh21N21M4GB in contact with titanium VTL-0 in different corrosive media. The results of laboratory tests show the absence of the effect of titanium in the entire investigated range of values of the ratio of the surface areas on the corrosion rate (less than or equal to 0.02 g/(m/sup 2/ X h)) and the anodic current density (n) (ca 0.00045 A/cm/sup 2/) of steels 03Kh18N11 and 12Kh18N10T in 50% nitric acid and 03Kh21N21M4GB and 06KhN28MDT in 30% formic acid. The pitting resistance of a series of experimental stainless steels with varying amounts of nickel, chromium, molybdenum, manganese and nitrogen and a number of commercial stainless steels and nickel based alloys has been studied in highly concentrated chloride media. The results show that nitrogen enhances the pitting resistance of stainless steel and exceptional corrosion resistance is achieved with high levels of nitrogen in combination with suitable amounts of molybdenum and chromium.
