We present a detailed characterization of the recently discovered i-R-Cd (R=Y,Gd-Tm) binary quasicrystals by means of x-ray diffraction, temperature-dependent dc and ac magnetization, temperature-dependent resistance, and temperature-dependent specific heat measurements. Structurally, the broadening of x-ray diffraction peaks found for i-R-Cd is dominated by frozen-in phason strain, which is essentially independent of R. i-Y-Cd is weakly diamagnetic and manifests a temperature-independent susceptibility. i-Gd-Cd can be characterized as a spin glass below 4.6 K via dc magnetization cusp, a third order nonlinear magnetic susceptibility peak, a frequency-dependent freezing temperature, and a broad maximum in the specific heat. i-R-Cd (R=Ho-Tm) is similar tomore »« less

Structural and chemical orders in $N i_{64.5} Z r_{35.5}$ metallic glass by molecular dynamics simulation

The atomic structure of Ni_64.5Zr_35.5 metallic glass has been investigated by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The calculated structure factors from the MD glassy sample at room temperature agree well with the X-ray diffraction (XRD) and neutron diffraction (ND) experimental data. Using the pairwise cluster alignment and clique analysis methods, we show that there are three types dominant short-range order (SRO) motifs around Ni atoms in the glass sample of Ni_64.5Zr_35.5, i.e., Mixed- Icosahedron(ICO)-Cube, Twined-Cube and icosahedron-like clusters. Furthermore, chemical order and medium-range order (MRO) analysis show that the Mixed-ICOCube and Twined-Cube clusters exhibit the characteristics of the crystalline B2 phase.more »« less

Atomic-layer-resolved composition and electronic structure of the cuprate $B i_{2} S r_{2} CaC u_{2} O_{8 + δ}$ from soft x-ray standing-wave photoemission

A major remaining challenge in the superconducting cuprates is the unambiguous differentiation of the composition and electronic structure of the CuO₂ layers and those of the intermediate layers. The large c axis for these materials permits employing soft x-ray (930.3 eV) standing wave (SW) excitation in photoemission that yields atomic layer-by-layer depth resolution of these properties. Applying SW photoemission to Bi₂Sr₂CaCu₂O_8+δ yields the depth distribution of atomic composition and the layer-resolved densities of states.
