Temperature and precipitation variability in response to climate change affects water cycling of watersheds and can potentially impact water quality, water availability, elemental and molecular fluxes, and biogeochemical processes. Here we report the measurements of light stable isotopes and greenhouse gases analysis to a large multidisciplinary project addressing watershed function. A Free-Air Carbon dioxide Enrichment (FACE) array was assembled in a cotton field at Yazoo City, MS, in the summer of 1987 to develop and evaluate control of CO/sub 2/ concentrations over extended periods in an agricultural setting. A variety of system configurations was tested in 17 case-runs, at CO/sub 2/ concentration set points of 500, 600 and 700 ppM. Reliable data were obtained from 532 hours out of 602 hours of operation. Phase equilibria in mixtures containing carbon dioxide, water, and chloride salts have been investigated using a combination of solubility measurements and thermodynamic modeling. The solubility of water in the CO2-rich phase of ternary mixtures of CO2, H2O and NaCl or CaCl2 was determined, using near infrared spectroscopy, at 90 atm and 40 to 100 °C.
