Elevated levels of arsenic in Yellowknife, NWT, Canada, from historic and recent gold mine operations, are of increasing concern to Yellowknife residents. The study of arsenic in Yellowknife plants is a part of ongoing bioavailability and food chain research. A variety of plants from Yellowknife were analyzed for total arsenic and water soluble arsenic species. The plants included vascular plants and bryophytes (mosses). Total amounts of arsenic were greatest in mosses and varied greatly within specimens of the same plant species from different locations. Gold, sulfur, and arsenic in metamorphosed iron formation of the Contwoyto Lake area, Northwest Territories, Canada

Gold in the Contwoyto Lake area is restricted to sulfur-bearing Algoma-type iron formation (IF) of Archean age occurring within a variably metamorphosed and deformed succession dominated by turbidites but containing minor volcanic rocks. In some occurrences, notably the Lupin mine, much of the gold is stratiform and uniformly disseminated in cherty, pyrrhotite-rich, but arsenic-poor IF interbedded with barren silicate-rich IF. However, significant gold also occurs in quartz veins and arsenic-rich areas adjacent to quartz veins.
